About the Reading Link Challenge

Children's Librarians from Port Coquitlam and Coquitlam Public Library branches work with School Librarians to get Grade 4 and 5 students to participate in the program.  Interested students form teams of 6 or 7 players, and each team is responsible for gaining thorough knowledge of 6 books. Students get their books in December and read until February, when all the teams within each school challenge each other to get a winning team.  Then, winning teams from each school come to their branch libraries to determine an inter-school winner.  The winning team then goes to the Grand District Final.  The winning team also receives The Reading Link Trophy, with their school name engraved on it, which the team keeps on display at their school for one year.  This year's teams are from Pinetree Way, Panorama Heights, Rochester, Mundy Road, Parkland and Queen of All Saints Elementary Schools.

History

This Battle of the Books Program started in 1993 at Kalamazoo Public Library.  It was used to encourage children in grades 4 and 5 to have fun and enjoy the spirit of reading.  In 1996, a similar pilot project was launched at Seattle Public Library, and in 2002, the Port Coquitlam and Coquitlam Public Libraries joined the Challenge.
